Beginner tips and tricks for Amnesia: Rebirth
Friction games’ Amnesia: Rebirth is loaded with dark passages, hidden portals, and otherworldly creatures: three things any hardcore fan of the series will more than likely experience by this point. Like The Dark Descent, Justine, and A Machine For Pigs, resources are equally scarce, and progress is often determined by how far you’re willing to push your mortality as you brave the unknown.
Of course, navigating any form of uncharted territory in a survival horror game often leads to dire consequences, and Amnesia: Rebirth is no different. That said, there are several ways to make your time in the Algerian crypts a little less threatening. So before you go dark, be sure to keep these tips in mind.
Save your matches
Matches are one of the few sources of light you will find in your arsenal in Amnesia: Rebirth, which means preservation is key. Failure to hold onto the limited supply you have will, of course, result in many wandering around in the dark looking for entry points to delve deeper into the story.
That said, sometimes you will have to endure the darkness, if only to keep at least one match in your inventory until deemed essential for progress. Finding the balance and knowing exactly when to strike a match will be your key to tackling the darkest areas.
You can find matches in the stone storage boxes in and around the underground tunnels, which can be added to your inventory by removing the cover and interacting with them. However, since your eyes get used to the dark after a few short seconds, you should walk as much as possible in the dark. If your fear level gets too high, then lighting a match at the last minute until you reach a brazier or a torch.
Leave traces of breadcrumbs
With the amount of dark corridors and forts you’ll tiptoe through in Rebirth, you might get lost at least once or twice. But if you happen to have a few matches to lose, then you should always aim to leave some sort of breadcrumb with candles, torches and lanterns that you will find along the way.
Due to the complexity of some of the underground labyrinths, you will find that having to backtrack and retrace your steps can be quite time consuming and a chore. Therefore, if you can light the way and keep a journal of your path, you shouldn’t have to worry about getting lost.
Let the traveler’s amulet be your guide
Shortly after acquiring the Traveler’s Amulet in the prologue, you will discover that the medallion has the power to open portals between realms. These realms, which can be identified by holding the amulet over certain areas until it turns a warm green, will give you an idea of where you are and let you know you are on the right path. To increase your chances of finding the way forward, always have your Traveler’s Amulet equipped.
As you’ll find, equipping the Traveler’s Amulet will vibrate your controller when a portal is nearby. The amulet will glow and tremble as you get closer to your destination. Have it in hand as much as possible help you navigate in the darkwhile preserving your limited supply of matches.
Read everything you find
If there’s one thing Amnesia: Rebirth isn’t exactly short of, it’s collectible documents and memorabilia, many of which can be used to gain a deeper understanding of the world you’re exploring. Although not essential to complete the story, refreshing the remaining notes and memories can give you insight into some of the hidden chambers and passages that make up the underground link.
Notes, photographs, and books are all worth collecting if you find them. And unless you’re in danger or chased by a monster, you should always read all the information you find. If you are unable to hide data immediately, you can still browse your collected items by opening your inventory when it is safe to do so.
Squat down as often as possible
Despite all the narrow corridors and passageways that flesh out the world of Amnesia: Rebirth, you don’t need to crouch, crawl, or even sneak through many of them to progress. That said, you should aim to crouch as often as possible to avoid detection by enemies. Entering a crouched stance of course eliminates the possibility of being heard when moving through built-up areas, which can also prevent you from being chased by a nearby monster.
The good news is that you will know when a monster is exploring the area, as a growl, screech, or demonic noise will echo through the area. If it happens, turn off your match, get into a squat positionand kiss the walls until you find a safer area to explore. Once the sounds are gone, you can safely move on to the next section of the map.
stay in the shade
The desert can be a cruel place, which you will discover by spending several hours crossing its dunes and caves in the scorching heat.
It goes without saying that not taking proper precautions while exploring it can also lead you to an early grave. To avoid this, you will want stick to shade as much as possible. Once your anxiety level has decreased, you will be able to move more freely between the shadows.
There’s a way to track your temperature, of course, though it’s best to play the game with headphones on to hear it properly. It’s a crackling which gradually increases in volume as you spend more and more time in the desert. To play it safe, always move between shaded areas.
Avoid looking at bodies
Like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Rebirth also incorporates levels of fear and anxiety, which can be heightened by watching anything distressing from a distance. For example, if a monster passes by and you see it, you will automatically shiver and lose some of your vision. If not treated with Laudanumyou’ll soon find yourself passing out, which will take you back to a previous save point.
Of course, you’re bound to stumble upon your fair share of unsettling things when wandering the tunnels and forts of Algeria. But, if you can learn to look away whenever something pops up, you should be able to keep a lid on your sanity. One of the biggest problems you’ll face is death itself, which can cause Tasi to panic and lose some of her vision. If you happen to spot a corpse anywhere in Rebirth, try to keep your eyes on the ceiling as you pass by. And if your anxiety level drops, try to reach a well-lit area or escape to the nearest exit.
check your baby
The character you are playing is pregnant, so if your anxiety level is at an all-time high and you are about to pass out, be sure to check your baby. This will quickly lower your fear and anxiety levels and remove those unwanted thorns that cloud the edges of your screen.
Just be careful where you watch your baby, because standing in complete darkness will not help you regain your composure. If possible, try to stand near candlelight or in an open doorway.
Another reason you should watch your baby is to help add context to a large part of the story. As speaking with your baby will open up various passages of dialogue, you will also be treated to some backstory. Therefore, if time is on your side, try to spend a few moments talking to your baby in each new area you enter.
