Meet the Maker: Bill Stewart on 45 Years of Shaping Boards
Like many kids growing up in Southern California, my first surfboard was shaped by Bill Stewart. It was a used 9’2” longboard with a solid two-inch coat of wax, a collection of dings, and it had already been on the water for a lifetime. But it was perfect. Now, more than a decade later, I had the chance to meet its creator.
Bill Stewart is as I imagined. It has the weathered look that only a true surfer has. He is well-spoken, friendly, quick-witted, and makes fun of himself whenever he gets the chance. He shakes my hand and proudly presents a pink fingernail. He has granddaughters.
